IHOP logoAccording to a press release from IHOP, the eatery will be giving away free short stacks of buttermilk pancakes on Tuesday, Feb. 5th.

The free flapjacks serve a dual purpose: celebrate National Pancake Day and hopefully raise $3 million for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.

My Facebook friends spread the news today that Hong Kong House, a well-known Chinese restaurant closes shop on Thursday. Many claim it to be the most authentic Chinese restaurant in town and it has had some strong reviews on Urban Spoon, Yelp, and Chowhound. It was very popular years ago when the noted chef Peter Chang cooked there — the New Yorker even profiled him.

I called to confirm the news and was told that yes, the restaurant will be serving its last meal on Wednesday, March 14. When I shared the news on my wall, many friends expressed sadness at the news.

I’ve had some wonderful meals there. Saul Young, a Chinese-American photographer with the News Sentinel (of Cantonese descent), once met me for dinner there and turned me onto the delicious green beans (pictured above). An old boyfriend introduced me to the spicy chicken with sauteed cilantro, onions and chillies, which made it one of my favorite dishes. In turn, I recommended my favorite dishes to friends and also to a local food club that organizes via Facebook.

Many of my Facebook friends rallied after the news broke, and an event has been created for a farewell dinner on Wednesday. We’ll gather in person to sample some of our favorite Chinese dishes for the last time.
