the eco-amp environmentally friendly iPhone... →
This is pretty cool!
I’ve been tempted to get speakers for the company-issued iPhone, but don’t want to spend the money on an accessory for something that’s not technically mine.
Granted, this is $7.99 for 2 paper cones that you assemble, but I’m thinking it can’t be too hard to reproduce.

The inaccuracy of today's SCOTUS story
Today, the Supreme Court ruled on the controversial ‘Obamacare’ — a 5-4 decision upholding President Obama’s health care overhaul.
As expected, the Internet blew up with reactions to this historic decision. But what was not expected were the initial reports on the story.
As Chief Justice John Roberts began reading his decision, the CNN team inside the courtroom jumped the gun....

Another Facebook heads up
Surely by now, we’ve all heard, time and again, about various settings that Facebook changes without properly alerting its users.
Most of the time, it seems to me, these concern privacy settings — and users cry foul over the big, bad Facebook developers and their plots to rid us of our privacy.
Let me just say upfront, this is not one of those posts. This time, it isn’t privacy that...

Knoxville, a place for a happy marriage ...
… so says a new list.
It’s been a while since we found Knoxville in a list of “top 10” anything, so we were about due. (See past lists here)
Realage.com released a list of the “10 Best Cities for a Happy Marriage,” and ranked Knoxville #3. If you don’t recall, Real Age also listed K-town residents as the “oldest” in the U.S., based on a...

Unplug from the hive and plug into life
The following is my complete, unedited column that will run in this Sunday’s Knoxville News Sentinel. I ran so long that much of it had to be cut.

Photo taken on Atlantic Beach, NC. Property of Erin Chapin.
Recently, I had ten days off in a row. Let me just repeat that — ten days off in a row. (Pause for effect.)
It’s not like I’ve never had that much time off at...
Animated GIF may not be pronounced like you think →
An article by The Atlantic resurfaced today. The article outlines the history of the animated GIF.
More than two decades ago, in 1987, Compuserv developed the Graphics Interface Format, a file that allows users with incompatible PCs to exchange pictures. They dubbed it the GIF, pronounced with a soft-g, like Jif, the peanut butter.
Yep. That’s right. GIF is actually pronounced JIF. Is...
Is social media ruining real-life relationships? →
It’s Erin’s week for the ol’ #trending column, and she tackles an issue that I dare say affects all of us. At least, all of us who are members of the social-media community — which, let’s face it, is pretty much all of us.
Her columns focuses on “unplugging” from the digital world and your many devices during vacation, which she attempted to do recently....

Analysis shows Twitter rules at Bonnaroo, CMA...
The Tennessean published an interesting story today looking at the social media trends from last weekend’s two major music festivals in the state, Bonnaroo and the CMA Music Festival.
Not surprisingly, Twitter topped Facebook in terms of participation during the events:
Nearly 95 percent of all CMA Music Festival social media were in 140-character Tweets. At Bonnaroo, Twitter accounted...

My daily laugh ... or 4
It’s been a bit of a tough week for this online producer. With Jigsha out in the trenches covering Bonnaroo and Erin on vacation, I’ve been left to my own devices for much of the time.
So when I found this post from the Atlantic Wire, offering some much-needed laughs, I ran with it. And now I want to share that with you.
The first thing I want to highlight is something a friend...

How we're covering Bonnaroo!
Fountain at Bonnaroo in 2011 (taken via Instagram).
I’m at home today, preparing my gear and snacks for the 2012 Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival! Reporter Hayes Hickman, photographer Adam Brimer and I will depart for our three hour-long drive to Manchester, Tenn., early tomorrow morning.
Our Web coverage of Bonnaroo has changed heavily in the past decade, and that’s the topic of...

Social-media identity theft — and how to avoid it
A few weeks ago, our own Erin Chapin wrote a great column about our online identity — Does your digital image reflect who you are? It was a great read, which raised some important points about how we represent ourselves through our Internet and social media activity.
Today, I want to talk about something that sounds similar but is a completely separate issue: our social media identities.
When I...

Beautiful East Tennessee weather and a little...
Over the weekend, I enjoyed the beautiful weather in Knoxville by getting outside and celebrating a friend’s 30th birthday.
One of the highlights of the party was a 14-team cornhole competition. My team lost immediately so I began taking iPhone photos while the sun went down.
I love this one particular shot. I ran it through the Snapseed app for iPhone to adjust the color clarity, but...

Zombies, bath salts or too soon to tell?
As we first blogged about last week — first here and then in a bit more depth here — there have been a few recent incidences that many people believe signal the impending zombie apocalypse.
I came across a great Google map compiled by Newsweek and The Daily Beast called Zombie Instances, where they’re tracking “suspicious incidences or infections” and “acts of strange...

Nerdy news roundup
I’m a nerd girl. It bothered me a little when I was in school and couldn’t scare up a date to save my life, but I’m totally cool with it now. And I’m not one of those “ironically nerdy” hipster people. Ugh. Please.
Sometimes, I get a little distracted as I crawl the Web looking at the bizarre things that interest me. Today was like that. I’m about to go...

Freedom of speech, #trending edition
This Sunday, in our weekly #trending column, I take on the First Amendment and Internet trolls. To be more precise, I look at how freedom of speech applies to our online activity and interactions in open forums.
One of my focal points is how few people seemingly understand the First Amendment and the rights it guarantees.
(For the record, I’m definitely one of those people who can be...

Pinterest a great East Tennessee vacation planning...
My close friends and colleagues are probably sick of me preaching the benefits of Pinterest. But I think the social networking sites really covers a lot of niches well (hello, endless recipe ideas!). But the idea of vacation planning via Pinterest is new to me. In the last few weeks, several tourism entities have started following the knoxnews Pinterest account I manage. They stopped me in my...
